I wish to take this opportunity to share with you some latest developments and the upcoming strategy of AsiaWorld-Expo among all our important stakeholders.
Latest Economic Contribution Assessment of AsiaWorld-Expo
The latest Economic Contribution Assessment Report, conducted by professional services firm KPMG Transaction Advisory Services Limited, reveals that exhibition and conference events held at AsiaWorld-Expo contributed around HK$13.4 billion to the local economy in 2010. The 25% increase over 2009 followed the positivemomentum the success of the record-breaking 'River of Wisdom - Animated Version of the Riverside Scene at Qing Ming Festival' Exhibition. This economic success likewise translated into significant job opportunities, with over 26,000 full-time jobs generated by AsiaWorld-Expo in 2010. To celebrate that success, we thank you again for your support to AsiaWorld-Expo over the years, without which we would not have achieved these results.
In addition, the Report shows that visitor profile has seen a shift in the mix of international visitors from 2006 - 2010. An increasing percentage of international exhibition visitors are from Mainland China, accounting for 34% of all international visitors in 2010, compared to 20% in 2006 as far as AsiaWorld-Expo is concerned. This trend is also reflected in the latest figures of the Hong Kong Tourism Board for the first half of this year. The Report also mentioned that industry players are positive about AsiaWorld-Expo and expect that AsiaWorld-Expo takes full advantage of the increasing connectivity including the development of Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge as well as the trends of strong economic growth in mainland China.
Strategy: 2016 and Beyond
In view of the above and riding on the enormous opportunities as presented by China's 12th 5-Year Plan as well as AsiaWorld-Expo's unique geographical location in the PRD (Pearl River Delta) region, AsiaWorld-Expo is embracing the opportunities ahead. Served by a pioneering transportation system linking Hong Kong, Macau and the PRD in a region-wide commute of one hour, AsiaWorld-Expo will enjoy a direct catchment of over 100 million people and emerge as the world's major gateway to an economic powerhouse with our unique geographical location in the PRD. Looking ahead, our business strategy for the next five years is as follows:
- More resources will be allocated to promote and leverage on our unique geographical location in the PRD region;
- We will, along with our MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Exhibitions) partners, embark on a series of promotional roadshows around the cities in the 1-hour metropolis radius of PRD;
- We will leverage on the business opportunities in the new development zones in the PRD including Qianhai (Shenzhen), Nansha
(Guangzhou) and Hengqin (Zhuhai) with a view to attracting more MICE events, visitors and delegates
