AsiaWorld-Expo welcomed a record number of trade visitors in September and October, despite concerns that the global economic slowdown might impact business.
“These exceptional visitor numbers are great news for Hong Kong,” remarked Mr. Allen Ha, Chief Executive Officer, AsiaWorld-Expo Management Limited. “It shows categorically that hosting MICE events provides a massive boost to the local economy. AsiaWorld-Expo is proud to play its role in contributing to Hong Kong’s economic growth, with the facilities, the expertise and the status to attract the world’s biggest names.” Mr. Ha added.
Visitor numbers were buoyed by a series of recurrent international shows, covering jewellery, fashion, home products, electronics and the environment. “These major fairs confirm that AsiaWorld-Expo has the facilities to attract visitors, buyers and exhibitors from around the world,” said Mr. Ha.

September Hong Kong Jewellery & Gem Fair
21-25 September 2009 (AsiaWorld-Expo)
|
|
The newly implemented ‘one fair, two venues’ structure, together with strong interest from China and India, buoyed attendance at the Hong Kong Jewellery & Gem Fair, despite the economic downturn. Exhibition space grew by 25 percent to 120,000 square metres across the two Hong Kong leading exhibition venues, exhibitors increased by 16 percent to 3,061 from 44 countries and regions, and trade visitors rose by 5 percent to 39,146, supported by buyers from China (up 14 percent) and India (up 12 percent).
“This year the product sectorisation that located all exhibitors of jewellery materials to AsiaWorld-Expo, while exhibitors of finished jewellery were at Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, made sourcing easier for our visitors,” said Ms. Celine Lau, Director of Jewellery Fairs, UBM Asia. “The rise in visitor figures caught everyone by surprise,” she added.
UBM Asia was particularly pleased with the response from buyers to the enlarged exhibition area at AsiaWorld-Expo. “The number of visitors at AWE increased way beyond our expectations and this paves the way for the long-term development of the event to secure its position as the leading jewellery fair in the world,” said Ms. Lau.

Visitors were clearly impressed by the new ‘one fair, two venues’ format that saw jewellery products and jewellery finished items separated across two venues.

"There’s been a good increase in visitors to AsiaWorld-Expo this year and I was impressed with the layout of booths which put diamond and technology exhibitors under one roof."
Rushit Doshi, owner of Rushit Enterprise, a manufacturer of tools and equipment from India
Views from buyers …
"We’ve been coming for the past 15 years, and I would say the product sectorisation this year worked well. The shuttle bus to AsiaWorld-Expo was very convenient."
Sergio Carrafa, representative of Sudamerica from Switzerland
"I come to source new gemstone suppliers and to update myself on market trends. This year I was impressed by the scale of the fair at AsiaWorld-Expo. Access was easy and the hallways were clear, so it was more efficient to locate products."
